PEORIA, Ill. — There’s really no excuse not to get one.
UnityPoint Health and the Tazewell County Health Department are teaming up for the 21st year Friday to celebrate National Mammogram Day.
Diagnostic Radiologist Dr. Christine Wigginton, with UnityPoint Health, says three locations are involved.
“We have the Methodist Diagnostic Center, Pekin and Proctor. And, it’s for uninsured and under insured women 40-64, who are residents of Peoria, Woodford and Tazewell Counties,” Wigginton says.
Those who are eligible can receive a free walk-in mammogram between 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. Friday.
Wigginton says several factors can put you at higher risk for breast cancer.
“As we get older, our risk for breast cancer increases. Also, there are people that have genes called BRCA 1 and 2, that definitely increases your risk of breast cancer,” Wigginton says.
There patients that have dense breast tissue, and that actually increases your chances of breast cancer as well, according to Wigginton.
“Early detection is key in fighting breast cancer, and that starts with a mammogram,” Wigginton says.
To receive a mammogram free of charge Friday, you’ll need to present a legal I.D. and your last two pay stubs.
