PEKIN, Ill. – A history-making season for the Pekin Dragons football team continues Saturday.
The Dragons play Lake Zurich in the third round of the Class 7A playoffs Saturday afternoon at home, taking their 11-and-0 record — counting the post-season — into a game versus a 10-and-1 team.
“It’s the law of momentum,” said Cole Stoner, Pekin High School Athletic Director, on WMBD’s “The Greg and Dan Show.” “I think we really started it last year, maybe even the year before. Coach (Doug) Nutter and these kids, they just…kept gaining steam and kept getting better, and kept preparing themselves for these big moments.”
Stoner says there are, among others, two advantages for Pekin: it’s a “home” game, and they have a female kicker, Mylee Hansen.
“Mylee is just another piece to a wonderful team,” said Stoner. “She does an unbelieveable job doing her job, and with a lot of attention. There’s not a lot of high school kids that get the attention that she gets, and she still handles it herself perfectly.”
Stoner says even in years when the Mid-Illini Conference is down, it’s still pretty tough, and Pekin has risen to the occasion.
Saturday’s game starts at 2:30. Some tickets will be available at the gate, but Stoner says they’re also available online by CLICKING HERE.
