EAST PEORIA, Ill. – The cost of East Peoria’s wastewater treatment plant upgrade project will be a little bit higher.
The city council approved funding nine additional smaller tasks needed to complete the project on Tuesday night for $137,049. Some of those tasks include an eye wash station, heaters to prevent pipes from freezing, and building a wall extension to contain sludge in the facility.
The need for the work was discovered during excavation for a sump pump pit, according to Commissioner Michael Sutherland.
“I just wish that there was a way that we could’ve headed some of this stuff off, which would have been very possible if we would have thought this through a little bit better on the design stage of this,” Sutherland said.
Mayor John Kahl said sometimes that improvements, like those approved, come out of nowhere.
“I understand nobody’s happy with change orders. But these projects, there’s always a lot unforseen stuff,” Kahl said. “You can plan to the best of your ability, but when you’re dealing with that’s stuff this old, sometimes you digging into it and you discover everything.”
The wastewater treatment plant upgrade project is in its 4th and final stage. The $68 million dollar project is expected to be completely finished in July.
