MACOMB, Ill. – Police in Macomb say one person died, and another ten people were injured, after a shooting near the campus of Western Illinois University.
Authorities say the shooting occurred just before 2:00 a.m. Saturday, when an altercation led to shots being fired at an off-campus party.
Many of the ten people injured suffered what police described as superficial gunshot wounds. Six of those injured were WIU students. Those suffering more serious injuries were taken from McDonough District Hospital in Macomb to other facilities.
One person was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s name is not being released pending notification, but police say the person is not a WIU student.
Police say an investigation is continuing, but did not say if any suspect or suspects are in custody. Macomb Police are looking for photos or videos from the incident.
All WIU athletic events are cancelled this weekend, while other events may go on as scheduled. The university is making counselors available to students.
