MACOMB, Ill. – Police in Macomb say they’ve made one arrest in connection with a shooting during an early Saturday party at off-campus housing connected to Western Illinois University.
Macomb Police say as they’ve developed persons of interest in the investigation, one of those persons has been questioned and arrested. That person, so far unidentified, is being charged with a Class-X felony of Armed Violence.
The shooting happened prior to 2:00 a.m. Saturday, claiming the life of one person pronounced dead on the scene, and injuring ten others — six of which are WIU students. The fatality is not believed to be that of a WIU student.
Police say they’ve collected evidence through search warrants and interviews, along with photo and video footage from around the scene.
“Those that wish to participate in gun violence are not part of our community and will be dealt with swiftly and fairly in the prosecution of this case,” said Jeff Hamer, interim Macomb Police Chief, in a news release.
According to broadcast reports, the Macomb School District says it’s believed at least two students who went to the party were minors. Superintendent Patrick Twomey said he’s grateful none of the district’s students were seriously injured.
