GALESBURG, Ill. โ Saturday is a day to remember a sheriffs deputy in Knox County who died in the line of duty.
It was one year ago Deputy Nicholas Weist, 34, was killed, when a car driven by Daylon Richardson, 23, of Granite City, while allegedly leading other police on a high-speed chase, struck Weist as he was laying out spike strips just past the Knox/Henry County Line on U.S. 150.
This week, the Knox County Board approved a resolution naming every April 29th โDeputy Nicholas Weist Dayโ in Knox County.
Current Knox County Sheriff Jack Harlan has presented Weistโs family with a โMedal of Valorโ โ the first recipient of that medal.
Richardson, meanwhile, remains jailed in Henry County, as his case has not yet gone to trial on Murder and other charges.
