SAN JACINTO COUNTY, Tx. – The man accused of shooting and killing five people at a home in Cleveland, Texas, has made his first appearance in court since being arrested several days after a manhunt to find him.
Francisco Oropeza, 38,. is charged with five counts of Murder.
He’s accused of shooting and killing five people at his neighbor’s home after they asked him to stop firing his gun in his yard in Cleveland, Texas.
According to Fox News, Oropeza’s Attorney, Anthony Osso, disputes that story.
“The initial story about asking him not to shoot his gun in the back yard because a baby was sleeping is probably not going to prove to be accurate,” said Osso, to reporters Thursday after the initial court appearance.
Todd Dillon, San Jacinto County District Attorney, says he wants Oropeza to have a fair trial.
“Due process in the United States, it’s never been something that’s been cost efficient,” said Dillon. “It’s because it’s one of the most important things that we do.”
A grand jury is expected to meet in June or July, and Osso says it’s possible then his client will instead be charged with Capital Murder.
Oropeza’s common law wife was also arrested and charged with hindering apprehension of a felon, according to Fox News.
