PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police say the driver of a car that crashed in South Peoria Monday morning had been shot — and the coroner confirms the shooting has become fatal.
A Peoria Police spokesperson says officers responded to an area near Westmoreland and Grinnell around 8:45 a.m., after a car had struck a utility pole — and a ShotSpotter alert had been reported detecting four rounts fired.
Officers on scene then discovered a male victim with a gunshot wound.
That victim — identified as 29-year-old Roy Payne — was taken to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in critical condition, and later died.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says Payne died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, based on an autopsy.
Police have no word on arrests or suspects as of yet, and they say they are still investigating.
