SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Illinois drivers should expect to see increased police patrols statewide through the Fourth of July holiday.
Illinois Department of Transportation Spokesperson Paul Wappel says state and local police are boosting patrols through Tuesday, to help keep the public safe.
“The Drive Sober-Get Pulled Over campaign is underway, and it will be through July 5th. You know, there’s zero tolerance for anybody driving impaired by alcohol, marijuana or any other drugs, and they will be ticketing anyone who is driving impaired,” Wappel says.
Police will also be looking for people not buckled up behind the wheel.
Over last year’s Fourth of July holiday in Illinois, there were 19 crashes leaving 20 people dead, according to I-DOT.
“We just want to remind people that if you’re going to be using alcohol, or another impairing substance, give your keys to a sober driver or call a taxi, rideshare service or community ride program. If anyone’s out there, and you see an impaired driver on the road, please contact law enforcement immediately,” Wappel says.
