SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A big ruling is expected Tuesday from the Illinois Supreme Court – one that could make or break a big campaign promise from Governor JB Pritzker.
More than 60 state’s attorneys – including many in this area excluding Peoria County – filed suit to block the provision of the state’s SAFE-T Act that was supposed to end cash bail in the state at the beginning of the year.
“I watched a little bit of the (oral argument) proceedings,” said Pritzker, back in March. “It was fascinating to listen to both sides. It’s clear to me that there’s one side that has the much better argument on the SAFE-T Act, and I think that will prevail.
Pritzker has long said posting a cash bail favors the rich.
The act would force judges to determine just how violent a potential criminal may be, or if they may be a flight risk – things often considered in bail now.
