PEORIA, Ill. – If it’s too hot for you to be outside, it’s too hot for your pets too.
The Peoria Humane Society’s Kitty Yanko says with temperatures near 100 degrees the rest of the week, it’s important to limit your pet’s time outdoors.
“So, when it’s hot and sunny out, the recommendation would be to take those walks early in the morning. Honestly, with temperatures as high as they’re going to be this week, it’s probably not even going to be good to do it later at night…once we get into more reasonable temperatures, evening walks are fine,” Yanko says.
When it’s in the upper 90s outside, the asphalt is even hotter, and that can be a real problem for pets when you walk them.
“Even if they don’t get burned, it’s going to be uncomfortable and painful for them. Their pads are very sensitive, so we really want to avoid those hot times of the day,” Yanko says.
If your pets have to be outside for an extended amount of time, Yanko says they need to have plenty of clean, cool water and shade.
“They need a cool place to catch up on breathing and not overheat,” Yanko says.
She adds, “Pets that are already prone to breathing issues, like Pugs and Persian cats, should definitely be inside with air conditioning and fans.”
