PEORIA, Ill. – Gas prices in central Illinois are on a downward trend, but that trend might not last too long.
GasBuddy is reporting the average price of unleaded is $3.93/g, down 7.5 cents from last week. The average is 20.6 cents higher than last month, and 4.4 cents higher than one year ago.
They’re reporting the cheapest price in Peoria at $3.66/g and the highest at $4.19/g.
AAA is reporting an average of $3.94/g in their survey of the Peoria-Pekin metro area. That’s 6.7 cents lower than last week, 21.9 cents higher than a month ago, and 2.8 cents higher than a year ago.
Both GasBuddy and AAA are reporting similar numbers for the average in Illinois. GasBuddy is reporting the statewide average at $4.06/g, down 6.8 cents from last week. AAA’s average is $4.08/g, 6.2 cents higher than one week ago.
Analysts believe the lower prices are in part due to the summer driving season wrapping up, but it might not last long.
“The drop may be short-lived, as one of the nation’s largest refineries partially shut last week after a fire at a storage tank, and as we see more tropical activity that could lead to further disruption,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.
