SPRINGFIELD, Ill. โ A new state law taking effect January first will expand the potential number of candidates that could be Illinois State Troopers.
Starting January first, under one option, education requirements could be waived if certain other requirements are met.
โThey have to have successfully completed basic law enforcement training, have at least three years of continuous full-time service as a peace officer with the same police department, and theyโre currently serving as a peace officer,โ said Sgt. Aldo Schumann, a recruitment coordinator with Illinois State Police.
Schumann says another change is allowing more military veterans to be able to apply.
โThe changes are to open up our applicant pool a little bit more, and give other law enforcement officers, and more folks, an opportunity to join our agency,โ said Schumann.
Otherwise, trooper candidates must be at least 21, have no felony convictions, and must be willing to accept assignment anywhere in the state.
