PEORIA, Ill. – There are ways you can do it all year, but Saturday, authorities are making an annual special effort to make sure what’s in your medicine cabinet is safe.
Saturday is “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.”
The Drug Enforcement Administration describes it as “providing a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.”
In addition to growing concern in the country about the abuse of things like opioids, officials say medications that you might still have past their expiration date can be harmful, if not fatal if used.
Authorities also say that doing something like flushing medications down the toilet can pollute the water supply, and expose the general public to dangerous chemicals.
Among local agencies, Pekin Police is hosting a location to dispose of your unwanted prescriptions Saturday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
