WASHINGTON, Ill. – A long-planned safety improvement is officially coming for a road in Washington that has seen a considerable number of vehicle accidents – some of them fatal.
Nofsinger Road will be realigned, connecting Cruger Road and U.S. 24.
The work will also involve a roundabout on Cruger.
“From a safety standpoint, I think it’s important, especially with young drivers living on the other side of the bypass, going to and from athletic events, churches, or visiting other neighborhoods,” said Gary Manier, Washington Mayor, to 25 News. “I think it’s going to make it a lot safer.”
Manier says the work was planned for in 2013, but put off after the deadly Washington tornado.
25 News reports there have been more than 150 crashes, six of them fatal, in the last 20 years in that area.
$4 million in federal funding secured by U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Dunlap), and another $3 million in state funding, will make the work possible.
