PEORIA, Ill. – There are more questions than answers after Bradley University announced Saturday night it was suspending its head women’s basketball coach.
The university said Kate Popovec-Goss was being suspended for the remainder of the team’s non-conference schedule, starting with Sunday’s home opener at Renaissance Coliseum against Central Michigan. The Missouri Valley Conference season doesn’t begin for the Braves women until December 30.
The university says in a statement the decision, “has been made in accordance with the university’s commitment to upholding the values and standards expected of its staff.”
It’s not clear what Popovec-Goss may have done to cause the suspension. She is starting just her second year at Bradley after playing and being an assistant coach at Northwestern University.
The Braves women are 0-1 going into Sunday’s game, which you can hear starting at 1:35 p.m. on AM 1290.
Assistant Coach Armelia Horton will take the bench for Popovec-Goss.
This has been a somewhat controversial week for Bradley University, with the announcement of $13 million in academic and other cuts as part of an effort to reduce a budget deficit.
University president Stephen Standifird will be interviewed Monday by WMBD’s Greg and Dan starting at 7:40 a.m.
