(FOX News) – A federal judge has approved a settlement that would halt the separation of families at the United States southern border.
FOX News reports the settlement between the Justice Department and families represented by the American Civil Liberties Union would prevent the separations until 2031.
It stops the resumption of a zero-tolerance policy enacted by former President Donald Trump. It saw more than 5,000 children separated from parents who illegally entered the country.
Minors at the border could still be separated from families if it is believed they are abused, or if their parents are convicted of a serious crime.
