SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – A local lawmaker is still trying to get legislation passed that would recommend banning former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan’s portrait from the Illinois Capitol, if Madigan (D-Chicago) is convicted of corruption-related charges.
State Representative Ryan Spain (R-Peoria) introduced a non-binding resolution last March to that end, but it’s been stuck in committee in the House.
A Spain aide tells 25 News there’s been renewed interest in the resolution, despite a judge this week agreeing to delay Madigan’s trial that was to start in a few months.
A spokesperson for current House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch says the only person talking about the measure is Spain, and that it’s hypocritical, because a portrait of former Republican Governor George Ryan still hangs in the halls of the House, and he was convicted of corruption.
