PEORIA, Ill. – The work continues into Tuesday for Peoria County snow plow crews as the first winter storm of the season impacts central Illinois.
County Engineer Amy McLaren says crews were out Monday night into Tuesday morning clearing roads as best as possible, but the snow and sleet keeps falling.
“Once we make a pass through the road, it comes back very quickly,” McLaren said. “So even though it looks like we might not have been there, when it’s a quarter inch an hour, we’re just trying to keep on our routes and keep it open as best as possible.”
McLaren says most of the snow in the county has been seen north of Route 150. She says the snow has also been the heavier, wetter snow that was forecasted, with a layer of rainwater underneath it.
McLaren says round the clock operations to salt and plow roads will continue until the storm’s end, forecasted for Wednesday morning. She says some equipment is ready and in place for Tuesday night if strong forecasted winds cause blowing and drifting snow in rural and open field areas.
McLaren says crews have seen a few cars in ditches so far Tuesday, and advises people to give snow plows room to work and plenty of space between cars on the roads.
