PEORIA, Ill. – The Peoria High School football team did not have to look far to find its new head coach.
Aaron Montgomery was appointed on Monday to lead the Lions. Montgomery is a 2004 graduate of Peoria High, and has been an assistant coach for the team since 2015. In his time as an assistant coach, Peoria High won the Class 5A state championship in 2016, and finished runner up in 2022.
Montgomery takes over for Tim Thornton, who stepped down as head coach last month to take a job in Florida. The move came a few weeks after Peoria High forfeited seven wins in the 2023 season for usage of an ineligible player.
Montgomery, in a statement, says he is “honored and excited” to be head coach of Peoria High.
“I am committed to building a program that not only excels on the field and in the classroom but also instills values that will benefit our student-athletes throughout their lives. I look forward to working with our talented athletes, dedicated coaching staff, and the entire Peoria High School community,” Montgomery said.
Peoria Public Schools says Montgomery will bring a coaching philosophy of teamwork, emphasizing discipline, and a holistic approach to player development.
