PEORIA, Ill. – We’ll see a virtual potpourri of winter weather heading into the weekend.
25 News First Alert Chief Meteorologist Chuck Collins says rain will move in and continue into early Friday afternoon, then change over back to wind driven snow Friday evening.
“Snow amounts will be light, but strong winds will cause visibility problems because of blowing snow. Bitterly cold air quickly will move in with rapidly falling temperatures Friday night and wind chills of 25 below zero Saturday night,” Collins says.
The National Weather Service in Lincoln says a Winter Weather Advisory will remain in effect for the Peoria area through 6 a.m. Saturday.
High temperatures on Sunday and Monday will be close to zero.
The city of Peoria is preparing for the forecasted bitter cold next week by announcing warming centers. The lobby of the Peoria Police Department on SW Adams St. will be open as a warming center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. All Peoria Fire Department locations will also serve as warming centers from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.
East Peoria’s EastSide Centre and the East Peoria Civic Plaza have been designated as warming centers during regular operating hours to offer area residents with no access to heat relief from the extreme cold.
EastSide Centre, 1 EastSide Drive, is open Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The East Peoria Civic Plaza, 401 W. Washington St., is open Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Heart of Illinois United Way 211 service is also available for people who need assistance in the cold weather.
