SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – State officials are touting an increased number of jobs in Illinois in the year-over-year period ending in December.
That wasn’t in the case in Peoria.
Federal data supplied through the Illinois Department of Employment Security indicates the number of non-farm payroll jobs did not change between December of 2022 and last December. The number sits at 172,200.
The Peoria area, the state says, saw declines in the sectors of Professional-Business Services, Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities, Information, Leisure-Hospitality, Educational and Health Services, and Financial Activities. Those were offset by gains in areas including Government, Retail Trade, Mining and Construction, Manufacturing, Wholesale Trade, and Other Services.
Most areas of the state, though, saw unemployment hikes in that period. The Peoria Metro Area Unemployment for December, 2023 sits at 4.8 percent – up nine tenths of a point from December, 2022.
In the city alone, that number jumps to 5.6 percent – up 1.3 percentage points in the year over year period.
Peoria County is at 5.2 percent. Tazewell County sits at 4.4 percent. And, Woodford County is at 3.7 percent.
“We are pleased to see continued positive economic trends across Illinois,” said Deputy Governor Andy Manar, in a news release. “IDES remains committed to sustaining a viable workforce ecosystem in which jobseekers and employers remain engaged and connected.”
