OTTAWA, Ill. – An Illinois Appellate Court decided Friday that a Peoria man must get a new trial after he was convicted several years ago of murdering a 14-year-old boy.
The 3rd District Appellate Court ruled that Doyle Nelson, Jr., now 22, should get a new trial.
The court Friday ruled that Judge John Vespa at trial improperly admitted Nelson’s text messages into evidence.
Nelson was convicted in 2021 of First Degree Murder in the 2019 shooting and botched robbery attempt of Zarious Fair.
Other arguments Nelson made in his appeal were rejected.
No word on when a new trial might take place.
