PEORIA HEIGHTS, Ill. – Super Bowl Sunday has become an unofficial holiday in the United States, full of gatherings with bountiful spreads of food.
That’s according to Pat Alwan, owner of Alwan and Sons Meat Company in Peoria Heights.
“Everyone hits the wings, hamburgers, they’re making Italian beefs,” Alwan said. “Everything and anything to throw a party.”
Alwan says other foods typically seen at Super Bowl parties include ribs, meatballs, and breaded appetizers. But he says people will buy what they need to have for a good party.
Alwan says for chicken wings, prices will typically increase about a month before the Super Bowl. But he adds prices have seen its peak after increases in the past few years.
“This year, we topped out at $3.49,” Alwan said. “That’s not bad, we’ve seen it higher. We’ve seen it at $3.99, $4.49.”
Overall, Alwan says people have not been spending as much for food at Super Bowl parties as they used to with prices on almost everything increasing.
Alwan says in order to keep your food safe before the party, you should keep chicken and beef refrigerated before you cook it. He also suggests preparing chicken in a separate area on wax paper or similar to avoid cross-contamination with other foods.
Alwan also suggests cooking food to proper temperatures, 165 degrees for chicken and 155 for beef. And if there’s any leftovers, to properly store and refrigerate them.
