PEORIA, Ill. – A man wrongly convicted of the stabbing deaths of two teenagers 50 years ago says he’d like to go to Peoria City Hall to talk about it.
Johnnie Lee Savory, whose lawsuit against the city for the wrongful conviction continues through the legal system, told a group in Chicago Tuesday he’d like to visit Peoria Mayor Rita Ali’s office about the matter.
“We’re calling on the Peoria mayor, the new elected mayor of Peoria, the first Black woman – I believe the first Black period – to be elected to the mayor’s office, to sit down with us, and let’s work this out,” said Savory.
25 News reports Savory served 30 years of a 50 to 100 year sentence for the deaths of Connie Cooper, 19, and James Robinson, 14, before DNA evidence exonerated him and then-Governor Pat Quinn pardoned him.
Savory now speaks on the need for the wrongfully convicted to get compensated for his time behind bars.
We have reached out to Ali’s office for comment, and have yet to hear back.
