CHILLICOTHE, Ill. – A Peoria man has been identified as the person who died in an officer-involved shooting in Chillicothe Tuesday evening.
Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood says an autopsy revealed that Marvin Martin III, 50, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and likely died instantly.
He was declared dead at the scene at 11:16 P.M.
Martin was involved in a traffic stop on a stolen vehicle in the area of Finney and Matthews Streets in Chillicothe just before 10:30 P.M. Gunfire was exchanged during the stop, and a Chillicothe police officer was struck, suffering non-life-threatening injuries.
Illinois State Police are investigating, per Illinois State Statute.

Chillicothe Police issued a statement with essentially the same details as what Illinois State Police previously released. That statement is below.
A man is dead after being shot by a Chillicothe Police officer during a traffic stop late Tuesday night.
Illinois State Police say the officer stopped a stolen vehicle around 10:23 p.m. at N. Finney and W. Matthew Streets, several blocks from Rt. 29.
The officer and driver of the vehicle exchanged gunfire. Both were shot.
The officer was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver died from his injuries.
As required by state law, Illinois State Police are handling the investigation.
CHILLICOTHE, Ill. – The Peoria County Coroner confirms one person is dead after an officer-involved shooting in Chillicothe.
Coroner Jamie Harwood said his office was still working late Tuesday night at W. Matthews and N. Finney Streets with Illinois State Police.
In a Facebook post, Chillicothe Police said there was no immediate threat to the community.
Any time there is an officer-involved shooting in Illinois, State Police are charged with handling an investigation.
More information is expected to be released on Wednesday.
