PEORIA, Ill. – A former engineer at Caterpillar perhaps best known for his decades on the Peoria City Council has died.
The Davison-Fulton-Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home says Lester Bergsten died last Saturday at the age of 93. A funeral service will be held Saturday morning.
Bergsten served on the Peoria City Council from 1973 to 1993, and had the Peoria Public Works facility on Dries Lane named after him.
He spent four decades on the committee that oversaw operations of the Peoria City and County Landfills – 44 years, in fact – and oversaw the construction and operation of three landfills.
Bergsten, a 40-year Caterpillar employee, also served in the U.S. Air Force for 37 years, seeing Active Duty during the Korean War among other conflicts.
Bergsten’s wife Jeanette died in 2016 after 63 years of marriage.
