PEORIA, Ill. – The good news, homicides by shootings were down in Peoria in 2023. The bad news, virtually every category of crime otherwise went up.
That’s part of the annual Peoria Police report, sent to the media around the close of business Friday.
“Despite the new challenges we faced this year, including a rise in crime, we took decisive action. We established task forces, increased patrols, and collaborated with other law enforcement agencies to combat these trends,” wrote Peoria Police Chief Eric Echevarria. “These efforts led to a significant drop in crime in downtown Peoria, the arrest of multiple violent offenders in federal charges, and the confiscation of dangerous weapons. We are proud of our team and collaborative partners’ commitment and dedication to ensuring the safety of our community.”
Data in the report shows that overall crime went up 13.5 percent last year – reports of crime increasing by more than 1,200 last year compared to 2022.
More than 3,600 adults were arrested last year, an increase of 300. Thirteen percent of all arrests were juveniles.
Among both adults and juveniles, simple assault was the most common reason.
Shootings overall went up by 22 percent. Homicide by gunfire, though, was down five percent.
