BURNSVILLE, Minn. – Two Minnesota police officers and a paramedic were killed early Sunday while responding to a domestic abuse call that resulted in an hours long standoff.
The suspect, who officials say was armed with multiple guns & ammunition, barricaded himself inside a home just before 2 a.m. Sunday with his family, including seven children aged 2-15 years old.
According to Fox News, several hours later the situation “escalated” into gunfire, at which time the officers and paramedic were hit.
By 8 a.m., the suspect was confirmed dead inside the home, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The suspect’s family all got out safely.
The first responders who were killed have been identified as Burnsville officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, both 27, and firefighter-paramedic, Adam Finseth, 40.
Police Sgt. Adam Medlicott was also shot and hospitalized but is expected to survive.
Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz spoke of their bravery in a Sunday news conference, saying, “Today three members of our team made the ultimate sacrifice for this community. They are heroes. ” A community vigil took place last night and MN Gov Waltz has ordered flags to be at half-staff starting at sunrise on Monday.
