PEORIA, Ill. – Roughly four years ago, the Christopher Columbus statue in Peoria’s Upper Bradley Park was removed over controversy about his role in the deaths of Native Americans.
The Peoria Park District Board on Tuesday gave the public a chance to tell them what they’d like to see replace the statue.
There are three options, which include a permanent sculpture, rotating artwork and an arch installation.
“We could look at something more of a gathering space. It wouldn’t be traditional art sculptures, but maybe archways or spaces with seating where people could gather,” Park District Executive Director Emily Cahill says.
Cahill tells 25 News, “One of the things we heard about in the past is that people in that neighborhood miss having that sculpture as a place where you met up with people.”
A second public input session regarding replacing the Columbus statue at Upper Bradley Park will be held next Tuesday (2/27) from 5-6 p.m at the Bonnie Noble Center.
