MOSSVILLE, Ill. – The Peoria County Coroner has released more information about a three-vehicle crash Saturday afternoon that left three people dead near Chillicothe.
The crash happened around 2:30 p.m. at the intersection of U.S. Highway 6 and Rt. 29.
Coroner Jamie Harwood says according to preliminary investigations and eyewitness accounts, 97-year-old Charles Mundy of Chillicothe was driving a van south on Rt. 29, and apparently didn’t stop at a red light at the intersection.
That led to a chain reaction crash involving a pickup truck and a midsize SUV, both turning onto Rt. 29.
Mundy was taken to OSF St. Francis Medical Center where he died.
Harwood says the two people in the SUV have been identified as 72-year-old Victor Snodgrass and his wife, 71-year-old Norma Snodgrass, both of Chillicothe. They were also pronounced dead at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
Harwood says all three had multiple blunt-force trauma injuries and likely passed away seconds after the collision. Toxicology results are pending, as is required by Illinois State statute.
Illinois State Police say a fourth person was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
The ISP is handling the investigation.
