PEKIN, Ill. – A manufacturer in Pekin is planning a project that would capture carbon dioxide it produces from its plant.
Alto Ingredients announced on Monday that it plans to work with Vault 44.01 on the project. Alto Ingredients produces and distributes renewable fuel and essential ingredients in key markets such as health, home and beauty, food and beverage, and industry and agriculture.
The project would install equipment that captures carbon dioxide generated by the plant’s ethanol production. It would then be transported and permanently stored deep underground in a geologic reservoir near the Alto facility.
Alto says it produces more than 600,000 metric tons of CO2 each year.
“Partnering with Vault on this CCS project will strengthen our Pekin facilities and enhance shareholder value while employing the latest technologies in the production of clean, low carbon intensity and environmentally friendly bioethanol, consistent with Alto’s ongoing commitment to further lower our carbon impact, protect our environment, and operate in a way that serves both our shareholders and the communities in which we operate,” says Alto President and Chief Executive Officer Bryon McGregor.
Alto says it will have discussions with landowners, stakeholders, and communities related to the project.
There’s no timeline announced for the project.
