PEKIN, Ill. – Election Day for the Illinois primaries is next Tuesday, and some voters in Pekin will be voting in a new location.
Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman says Precincts 7 and 9 will now be voting at the Pekin Public Library.
The original polling location for those precincts was the Pekin Township building, but the building has not received the proper permits yet to have people in the building. The township building suffered collapses of the west and south walls in September, and had to be partially torn down.
Ackerman says the township building served the county well for a voting location, but the Pekin Public Library is a good, long-term replacement.
“This is a facility that is available, it’s got great parking, it also has full-ADA compliance, so there’s no additions we’d have to make to make it ADA-compliant. So there was a number of factors there that made this a good location to go to,” Ackerman said.
Ackerman says contingency plans had been in place in case a change was needed. He says one other option was to have polls set up in the nearby parking lot, but says weather and long-term concerns were a factor in declining that option.
Ackerman says it’s rare to see a polling location moved so close to an election. He adds the county likes to keep polling locations in the same spot in each two year cycle; which includes the primary, general, and municipal elections.
Updated voter registration cards were sent out by the county on Monday.
