LINCOLN, Ill. – The status of the future of the Logan Correctional Center is uncertain after plans have been announced to rebuild it.
Governor J.B. Pritzker announced in a statement on Friday plans to demolish and rebuild the Logan Correctional Center and the Stateville Correctional Center in Crest Hill. The governor’s office says it would save the state money on deferred maintenance and annual upkeep costs.
Funding for both are included in the fiscal year 2025 budget, with construction costs estimated between $805 to $935 million.
The statement also mentions the status of Logan in the near future is still being worked on, with a timeline and location of the new facility to be determined.
Lincoln Mayor Tracy Welch tells 25 News the state has not given any reassurances yet the rebuilt prison would remain in Lincoln.
“We want to make sure that those people have jobs, and they have options if this facility is in fact going to close even temporarily,” he said.
Welch, in a joint statement with Logan County Board Chairman Emily Davenport, State Senator Sally Turner (R-Beason) and, State Representative Bill Hauter (R-Morton), says the prison provides more than 500 direct jobs to Lincoln’s economy, along with “immeasurable local economic benefits.” The statement called the decision by the Pritzker administration “devastating and infuriating.”
