MACOMB, Ill. โ Illinois State Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting on Saturday night, when police responded to a domestic dispute on N. Charles Street in Macomb.
The incident happened around 10 p.m., not far from the Western Illinois University campus.
A four-year-old and a 57-year-old man who held the child at knifepoint were killed.
When Macomb Police arrived, they saw blood and heard screams, then saw a man with a knife. The man refused to put the knife down.
ISP says the man ducked out of view of officers, then came back holding the knife around the childโs throat.
Investigators say the Macomb officer fired one shot and both the man and child suffered โfatal gunshot injuriesโ.
The 57-year-old man has been identified as Anthony George. Per the McDonough County Coronerโs policy, the childโs name will not be released.
A 36-year-old woman also suffered stab wounds at the scene.
Illinois State Police have begun reviewing body camera video, evidence, witness interviews and autopsy reports. Theyโve also met with family members of the deceased.
Once an investigation is final, the ISP will submit all reports and evidence to the McDonough County Stateโs Attorneyโs Office.
The officer who fired the shot is on administrative leave.
