PEKIN, Ill. – A new monument could soon come to Tazewell County after voters overwhelmingly approved erecting one.
A referendum to honor the county’s three Medal of Honor recipients received 85% approval from county voters in Tuesday’s election.
Tazewell County Clerk John Ackerman first proposed the referendum in September of 2023, citing a lack of support from the county board in constructing a monument.
The monument is expected to be placed on the courthouse grounds and be in place by 2025, with the estimated $80,000 price tag to be covered by money the county has in reserves.
Tazewell County is looking for a new auditor, after Brett Grimm ran unopposed for the Republican nomination for County Board Chairman. William Funkhouser won the Republican nomination for Auditor over Kaden Nelms, receiving 67% of the vote.
Democrats did not nomination anyone in both the County Board Chairman and Auditor races.
Four people were competing for three Republican nominations in both the 2nd and 3rd Districts on the Tazewell County Board.
In the 2nd District, nominations were won by Eric Stahl, Jonathan Hopkins, and Cathryn Stump.
In the 3rd District, nominations were won by Eric Schmidgall, Bill Atkins, and Tammy Rich Stimson. Michael Harris finished in 4th, one vote behind Stimson for a nomination.
Democrats did not nominate anyone in the 2nd and 3rd Districts.
Tazewell County reported 15.2% turnout for the primary election. Of that turnout, 71.9% of votes were cast on Election Day, 9.6% in early voting, and 18.5% in vote by mail.
