PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria City will play against international competition for the first time next month.
The club announced Wednesday the inaugural Copa Peoria Series, with two games against the under-23 club of Mexico Liga BBVA MX powerhouse Chivas de Guadalajara.
The exhibition games will take place June 9th and 12th at Shea Stadium.
Chivas senior team has won 12 league titles in its history, and has captured two continental CONCACAF club championships, most recently in 2018.
In addition to the games, both clubs and the Central Illinois Soccer Academy will hold a player identification camp for Chivas. Players from both teams will also be involved in a one-day youth soccer camp and a meet-and-greet.
“For our club it will always be important to provide international activity for the development of all our youth categories, as well as helping to grow soccer in different latitudes. The fact that Peoria welcomes our U-23 team with open arms in a 4-day event and with a cup challenge highlights its importance for both parties, so we are thrilled to go and do our best to make it a very special event for the fans and the entire community of Peoria,” said Fran Perez, director of Club Deportivo Guadalajara’s youth academy
Peoria City will start its third season in USL League Two on May 11th on the road against the Des Moines Menace. Their home opener is May 18th against Chicago Dutch Lions FC.
