PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria’s Friendship House has been selected to receive an upgrade of its outdoor green space.
BUILD Peoria says after what it calls “a record number of votes” from the community, an outdoor activity center at Friendship House will be the group’s 2024-2025 Community Project.
The activity center will include fitness equipment, a sand volleyball court, refinished basketball courts and garden beds and supplies. BUILD Peoria says the outdoor activity center at Friendship House will be available to hundreds of students who attend its after school and summer programs.
“We are so grateful for the opportunity to refresh and enhance our outdoor center,” said Peoria Friendship House CEO Marcellus Sommerville in a news release. “The children in our community need a safe environment to play and grow.”
Nick Yates, President of BUILD Peoria said, “The community had a tough choice to make this year with three incredible, impactful finalists.”
The other finalists were an overdose memorial garden at JOLT Harm Reduction and improvement to the outdoor theater space at Corn Stock Theater.
Next is raising money for the project. BUILD Peoria says it will work with Friendship House to fundraise for and construct the outdoor activity center over the next year.
Past BUILD Peoria community projects include: Duryea Dog Park, a resident officer home for the Peoria Police Department, shelters for CityLink bus stops, the Donovan Park Sculpture Park, POTENT Gratitude Park, Peoria Grown’s Market 309 and Christian Center baseball upgrades.
