PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria Police have released more details surrounding an arrest made in the shooting death of 18-year-old MikeQuese Taylor.
It was the city’s 5th homicide of 2024, occurring the evening of April 30th. Taylor was shot in the area of Forrest Hill and Knoxville, then taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
20-year-old Messiah Carpenter was identified as a suspect in the case, and search warrants were executed Tuesday morning just after 6:15 A.M. at two addresses connected to Carpenter.
Peoria Police detectives, the Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, and the Central Illinois Emergency Response team responded to an address in Hanna City, while the Peoria Police SWAT team responded to an address in Peoria.
Carpenter was taken into custody in Hanna City, and arrested by Peoria County Sheriff’s Deputies for weapons offenses. He was later charged by the Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office for First Degree Murder.
A pretrail detention hearing for Carpenter is scheduled for Thursday, after it was continued from Wednesday.

25 News reports 20-year-old Messiah Carpenter has been charged with First Degree Murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old MikeQuese Taylor last month.
Taylor died after he was shot near the intersection of Forrest Hill and Knoxville on the evening of April 30th.
Taylor was home from junior college in Kansas visiting his two-month-old son, and was a basketball player at Kansas City Community College.
A pretrial detention hearing was scheduled for Wednesday but continued to Thursday.
