PEORIA, Ill. – Peoria officers who have died in the line of duty were honored at an annual ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.
Peoria Police hold the memorial service each year during National Police Week.
Officers, families of the fallen, and members of the community gathered near a memorial stone outside Peoria City Hall.
15 fallen officers, whose names are engraved into the granite stone, were honored.
Chief Eric Echevarria told 25 News, the Peoria Police Department’s goal is to be more proactive in making sure officers and their families have the support they need at all times.
“Making sure that the mental health and the physical health of our officers is there,” Echevarria said. “And if something does happen, that we are providing resources to our families beyond what we’re doing at the police department.”
Two officers were lost in the line of duty in Illinois last year.
