PEORIA, Ill. – A man accused in the homicide of a college basketball player from Peoria was ordered to remain in jail until trial.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office says a petition to detain 20-year-old Messiah Carpenter was granted by a judge Friday.
Carpenter is charged with First Degree Murder in the shooting death of 18-year-old MikeQuese Taylor on April 30th, when two males wearing masks reportedly approached and shot Taylor at Knoxville and Forrest Hill.
Prosecutors say police were able to use surveillance video to identify Carpenter in possession at the time of a vehicle suspected to be used in the shooting.
Other evidence reportedly linking Carpenter to the shooting includes cell phone records and additional surveillance video.
Prosecutors say firearm evidence recovered from the scene was linked to several other shootings between rival groups that Taylor and Carpenter were reportedly in.
Prosecutors noted that Taylor’s car had been recently shot at and was a member of a group known as the “Jump Out Boys,” who were reportedly having a dispute with a group Carpenter was associated with called the “Snakes.”
Carpenter will be in court next on June 13th for an arraignment hearing.
