PEORIA, Ill. – CEFCU has reached a settlement with the Department of Justice after alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The credit union was accused in a complaint that it refused on multiple occasions to serve an individual with a hearing disability over the phone because they were using an interpreter to communicate.
CEFCU had allegedly refused to speak to the person through the interpreter, saying it could not proceed with a third-party present on the call.
The Department of Justice says while CEFCU did not admit to violating the ADA, it agreed to a monetary payment to the complainant to resolve the matter.
The credit union will also create an ADA policy and train staff about its requirements to equal access for service to customers with disabilities.
