PEORIA, Ill. – Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial beginning of summer, and typically when the pools open for the summer season.
Peoria Park District Aquatics Director Sienna Rogers says it will be just a bit longer before they can open their outdoor pools.
“Our guys are still going to be in training this week, we had a couple school districts go a little later than what we’re used to, so a lot of our employment base was still in school, in order for us to have everybody trained to open this weekend,” Rogers says.
The indoor pool at RiverPlex will have open swimming for the holiday weekend, and if you have a dual membership with the Greater Peoria YMCA, you can catch some rays and swim at their outdoor pool.
“They have a ton of fun stuff over there, planned and ready,” Rogers says.
For those who have never learned to swim, or have young kids who need to learn, the Peoria Park District has quite a few options this summer.
“One will go for the month of June, and the other will go for the month of July. I have a couple of options for folks that want to attend just one day a week, we have a Wednesday option that will go 8 full weeks, and then we have a Saturday option that will go 8 full weeks…we know that summer is busy, so we want to have a nice variety there,” Rogers says.
The Peoria Park District offers swimming lessons for all ages, from 6-months to adults.
Rogers says the park district has a crew of lifeguards ready to go, but they are still taking applications.
“We’re still hiring for lifeguards, but we’re still on track to open, and open strong. Our teams have all been in training since last week, we’ll have a couple more trainings this week…and I will start more classes, if we start getting more applicants,” Rogers says.
