LINCOLN, Ill. – With temperatures well into the 90s towards the end of the weekend, the National Weather Service in Lincoln is reminding everyone to keep the extreme heat in mind when getting ready to go out.
“The best way to prepare to be outside in the high temperature times, is to drink plenty of water, stay hydrated…wear loose-fitting and light-colored clothing. That way it’ll help reflect the sun, and keep some of the heat off your body,” NOAA’s Rebekka Copple says.
High temperatures will be accompanied by even higher heat indices.
“The heat indices are going to rise as well…as the dew points start rising. We’ve got heat indices of 100 to 105 from Sunday, all the way until Tuesday afternoon,” Copple says.
If you experience dizziness, a headache, excessive sweating, or nausea, you could be suffering from heat exhaustion.
“Whenever that happens, move to a cooler area, loosen your clothing and sip cool water. With heat stroke, some signs of that would be dizziness or confusion, or passing out,” Copple says.
If it is heat stroke, Copple says, call 9-11 and get medical attention immediately.
