PEORIA COUNTY, Ill. – The West Nile virus has been found in Peoria County.
The Peoria City County Health Department says it was recently found in a positive mosquito sample.
The virus is transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has fed on an infected bird.
The health department says it is accepting and collecting dead birds, specifically crows and blue jays, to further test for West Nile.
Common West Nile symptoms include fever, nausea, headache and muscle aches, and can last from a few days to a few weeks.
The health department says people can prevent the spread by reducing exposure to mosquitos, protecting yourself with clothes and insect repellent, and reporting mosquito breeding grounds.
