PEKIN, Ill. – The Pekin City Council solidified its decision Monday night to waive taxing people wanting to sell food and beverages out of their homes.
The original motion, put before the council in May, addressed a small business owner who wanted to sell baked goods from home, asking if taxes would apply.
City Manager John Dossey said his staff believed current code language would tax home-based operations, but the language was vague.
Pekin staffers asked the council to clarify city policy. They voted 6-1 against taxing small home-based businesses. Lloyd Orrick was the only council member in favor of the tax.
Monday night, city staff proposed an ordinance that would add language to city code, making it clear a tax would not be applied, according to 25 News.
The council voted unanimously to update that language.
