PEORIA, Ill. – A man charged with aggravated domestic battery has been ordered to remain in jail until his trial.
Kenneth Moultrie Jr., 28, is accused of beating his ex-girlfriend so severely that her jaw had to be wired shut.
The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office said Moultrie was arrested Thursday afternoon in connection with the alleged incident and a detention hearing was held Friday.
Police responded to an area of Linn Street in Peoria’s Center Bluff around 2 a.m. June 21 on a report of a man being shot.
While en route, officers received a report of a female calling 911 claiming she was on her way to a hospital and she shot her boyfriend in self-defense because he was beating her.
Moultrie was found with a non-life threatening gunshot wound to the chest when officers arrived at the scene.
At the hospital, officers met with the female victim who had visible injuries to her face and cooperated with police.
She told officers she had gone to Moultrie’s house because he was threatening to take his own life. When she arrived, Moultrie punched her multiple times, threatened to kill her and pinned her against a wall by her throat.
The woman said while he was pinned down, she pulled out a gun and shot Moultrie.
The State’s Attorney’s Office says no charges will be filed against the woman because she was acting in self-defense and had a legally owned firearm.
The investigation of the incident is ongoing.
