DUNLAP, Ill. – Dunlap athletes will soon have plenty of space to play, after the Dunlap School Board approved a new sports training facility that will be built near the middle and high schools, costing an estimated $8.5 million.
Dunlap District #323 Superintendent Scott Dearman laid out a proposal for the facility in June. He assured board members that the district has more than enough money to pay for it out of current reserves, which total $38 million.
Dearman said the goal is to allow students to practice without being on top of each other or in unfit environments.
Cheerleading team practices are currently being held in elementary schools, dance teams practice in hallways, and the marching band can only practice when the football field isn’t being used.
The 42,500 square foot training facility was approved in a five to two vote on Wednesday, according to 25 News.
It will include three basketball courts, a 160-meter indoor track with pole vault and long jump, a dance room, an indoor golf simulator, and a small training room.
Dunlap Schools plans to break ground for the training facility in the Fall.
