PEORIA, Ill. – A member of the Peoria City Council says he’ll run for mayor, challenging Rita Ali, who announced on Tuesday that she’s seeking a second term.
John Kelly has been an at-large council member since 2019.
“We’re very friendly, but on some things we’re polar opposites,” Kelly says of Mayor Ali. “We agree on a lot of things as well.”
Kelly said he’s trying to raise money, but the campaign won’t start in earnest until after the holidays. He said the November presidential election “properly takes a lot of oxygen out of the room.”
Kelly tells 25 News, he’s heard other potential candidates will also run for the mayor’s job. If three or more people run, there will be a primary on Feb. 25 to narrow the field to two candidates.
The election is set for April 1st.
