PEKIN, Ill. – A Tazewell County judge will decide Thursday whether a 21-year old woman accused of suffocating a 10-month old baby will remain in jail until her trial.
25 News reports that’s when a detention hearing for Makenna Rhodes will be continued.
Rhodes is charged with First Degree Murder in the June 26th incident, where she reportedly told police that she became overwhelmed and angry because the baby would not stop crying. She allegedly admitted to pressing a security blanket with a stuffed animal against the baby’s face and forced a pacifier in its mouth.
Prosecutors at the detention hearing Tuesday told the court they intend to present testimony that another child in Rhodes’ care suffered a broken arm and gave the child’s mother different stories about the incident.
Rhodes’ public defender says she had no intention of killing the child and would not be a risk of her harming others if she were released. They are requesting that Rhodes be confined to her mother’s home, wear a GPS bracelet, and stay away from all children.
It was revealed at the hearing that Rhodes herself has a three-month old son.
